Building History
The building started life as a processing and storage facility for the Westchester Grain Co. in 1909. The automobile had not yet made it's impact on daily life and the horse was still the preferred method of transportation. Grain was in demand across the county and the Westchester Grain Co. soon expanded to the present configuration in 1912. Over 30,000 sq ft of grain was being unloaded from schooners and steamships and distributed throughout Westchester.
When gasoline replaced grain as the main transportation energy source, the buildings occupants changed also. In the decades following, the building was home to Liberty Electric, The Steinmetz Machine Works, and finally, the Port Chester Bedding Company. Today it is a mix of commercial, creative loft, office, and restaurant use. |
